Description:

The Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze is the leading Polish modern, highly specialized clinical, scientific and training centre, which performs tasks in the area of modern diagnostics and therapy of cardiovascular diseases for adults and children, basic and preparatory clinical research, as well as graduate and postgraduate student and doctor training. In May 2011 a new building was opened – Pavilion B – where heart failure, minimally invasive heart surgery, and vascular and endovascular surgery wards started operating, including an ultramodern operating theatre equipped with a hybrid operating room, and the cardiology and angiology ward, including the Hemodynamics and Electrophysiology Labs. The Specialist Clinic Complex is a modern facility designed for patients with cardiac, vascular and pulmonic diseases. In 2012 a new investment project began (Pavilion C) in connection with a further expansion of the Silesian Centre with the addition of the nationwide lung transplantation centre, which also treats patients with mucoviscidosis, and modern departments of medical imaging of cardiac, lung and vascular diseases of adults and children.

Numerous factors contribute to the fact that the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases in Zabrze has been held in such high regard in Poland for 30 years. The most important one is the personnel – kind and competent doctors, who know foreign languages (English, German, Russian) and have been well-trained in Poland and abroad, considerate nurses, as well as medical and administrative staff, for whom the patient is always of the utmost importance. Additional advantages of the Centre are the comfortable conditions of the patients’ stay, which fosters their recovery, as well as the cutting-edge medical equipment – combined with the professional medical staff it guarantees a highly effective diagnostic and treatment process.

The measure of the credibility and high quality of our Hospital is the fact that for years it has been at the top of the Polish national hospital rankings for “The Best Cardiac and Cardiac Surgical Hospital” or “The Safe Hospital”.

The Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases in Zabrze has 303 beds, out of which 77 are fully monitored to a high standard with regard to the safety and effectiveness of treatment. Every year the hospital admits about 15,000 patients, of which about a fifth are patients from outside the Silesian Voivodeship, also from abroad. The Centre undertakes a full profile of cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as well as all types of cardiac surgeries carried out in the world, including minimally invasive surgeries.

At present, the hospital carries out over 12,000 invasive cardiac procedures a year. They include diagnostic procedures, such as: coronarography, pulmonary arterial pressure measurement or myocardial biopsy, as well as therapeutic procedures: percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, ablation, implantation of cardioverter-defibrillators, resynchronization devices, cardiac stimulators, percutaneous treatment of congenital and acquired heart diseases – Amplatzer implantation, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), Pulmonary artery valve transcatheter implantation (PAVTI), Mitra Clip transcatheter mitral valve repair procedure, balloon valvuloplasty, percutaneous interventional treatment of peripheral artery narrowing, including procedures on the carotid artery, stent and stent-graft implantation in aortic diseases.

Over 2,400 cardiac surgeries on adults and children are carried out in the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases in Zabrze every year, including many with the use of minimally invasive techniques. Half of them are surgeries of coronary heart disease treatment (artery revascularization, minimally invasive procedures, coronary procedures without circulation and with extracorporeal circulation) and its complications (surgical remodelling of a post-stroke left ventricle impairment, mitral valve regurgitation surgery). The acknowledged specializations of the Centre’s cardiac surgery are the following: surgical reconstruction of mitral, aortal and tricuspid valves, congenital failures treatment of adults and children, surgical treatment of rhythm disorder, including hybrid, minimally invasive surgeries on persistent atrial fibrillation unresponsive to treatment, which are being pioneered in Poland, as well as the surgical treatment of aortic aneurysms, including endovascular and hybrid.

From 1985, when professor Zbigniew Religa started to perform cardiac surgery in Zabrze, until 2015, over 37,600 heart surgeries have been carried out on adults and children, including 997 heart transplants, 120 lung transplants and 5 heart and lung transplants. Between 2009 and 2015, 56 POLVAD-RELIGA, Heart-Ware and Berlin Heart ventricles were implanted in adults and children.

Such great treatment results could not be achieved without access to the most innovative technologies. The cutting-edge medical equipment makes diagnostics and therapy increasingly effective and safe for the patient, which is reflected in the improvement of their quality of life. 7 cardiovascular interventional labs for adults and children, including 2 for electrophysiology and electrotherapy, are also equipped with high-tech devices.

International treatment standards are also in force in the Specialist Clinic Complex of the Silesian Centre for Heart Disease where almost 52,000 consultations for adults and children from all over the country are provided every year in several dozen offices and labs. Organization is of high importance when dealing with so much medical advice. In order to make the process as efficient as possible, the Silesian Centre, along the lines of a centre in Vancouver, Canada, and following the solutions implemented in the Oncology Institute in Gliwice, has introduced a task-oriented advice system, which makes it possible to quickly identify the patients’ medical condition and refer them for follow-up diagnostics and treatment to the best prepared specialist, for instance those specializing in coronary heart disease, congenital heart defects, hypertension or circulatory-respiratory failure. This is extremely important because with increasing social expectations this system guarantees the fulfilment of the most important needs – accessibility and quality of service.

Our motto: Our goal is to rescue, treat and give hope…
